New Jersey Pick 6 Overview
The New Jersey Pick 6 Lotto is the main state lottery game played in New Jersey. A new version was introduced on April 7, 2022, with a reduced number pool, more favorable odds, an automatic XTRA multiplier, a Double Play add-on, and a new ticket price of $2 per play.
Pick-6 features a minimum jackpot of $2 million that keeps increasing until someone wins. To win the jackpot, you need to match six numbers from a possible 46. You can also win prizes for matching three, four or five numbers.
The XTRA feature is automatically added to all Pick 6 plays and can increase the value of any non-jackpot payouts you receive by up to 10 times. You will see your multiplier printed on your ticket below your numbers, and it will be either 1X, 2X, 3x, 4X, 5X or 10X.
For the chance to win a $250,000 jackpot in every draw, you can also add the Double Play option for $1 more. You can win on both Pick 6 and Double Play, and XTRA applies to both.

New Jersey Pick Six Lotto History
- May 1980
The New Jersey Pick Six Lotto was first drawn in May 1980 and originally required players to select six numbers from a possible 39. - February 1986
In February 1986 the matrix was changed to six from 42 and a second weekly draw was added. - January 1989
In January 1989, the matrix was changed for a third time, now requiring players to select six from 46 numbers. - May 1997
A Cash Option was added to the game, allowing jackpot winners to claim their prizes as a single lump sum, rather than as a 20-year annuity. The following September, the annuity structure was changed from 20 years to 25 years. In New Jersey, players must nominate their chosen payment method at the outset rather than at the time of winning, the latter procedure being the norm in most other states. - September 2000
A 6/49 number matrix came into effect in September 2000. With the introduction of this format, there was a set prize for matching three numbers, and pari-mutuel prizes for the remaining prize tiers. - February 2001
The largest jackpot in Pick-6 Lotto history was worth $48.9 million and was won by James and Eileen Rath of Union in February 2001. - January 2015
On 13th January 2015, XTRA was launched as an additional option for players, increasing the value of non-jackpot prizes. - April 2022
In April 2022, the format of the game changed again. The pool of numbers was reduced from 49 to 46, boosting the odds of winning the jackpot. XTRA was automatically included as an instant multiplier on tickets, giving players the chance to win up to 10 times the value of non-jackpot prizes. Double Play was also launched as an optional add-on game for an extra $1, with a fixed jackpot of $250,000.
